I'm sure many people think they must be "sales people" to
work in the network marketing and MLM industry. I mean,
how many times do you hear a prospect say they "can't
sell?" We hear that all of the time, don't we?

After all, we all know network marketing and MLM is really
sales. You have sales of products to increase volume;
sales of people joining the organization, and sales to
friends and family. It's a tough business to be involved
with if you aren't a born salesperson. Let me be the first
to break this to you but there are "no" born sales people
in this world; only people with better people skills than
others. Something anyone can learn and improve on.

In my 25 year career in all types of sales and marketing
I've read all of the most popular "sales" books available.
I've learned how to get the customer mentally involved in
ownership, expose the problems in a business where I would
provide the solution, deal with objections, and deal with
people I didn't even like.

I've even spent hours in sales trainings and conferences
learning all of the new and latest manipulative sales
tactics. I was able to live a nice lifestyle, put my kids
through college, go on cruises and vacations to Walt Disney
World on a regular basis. Sounds successful doesn't it?

Here is the meat of this article. The 25 years I spent in
active sales and marketing did not prepare me for network
marketing or MLM. You would think I would have it made
with all of that experience behind me, but, oh no! It
actually became an impairment to working the business.

You see, network marketing and MLM does revolve around
sales but not in the traditional sense. In my opinion, I
had to learn a whole new way to present information, work
with the prospect, and pay more attention to helping them
then helping myself. Before, it was all about getting the
sale and making the money. Slam, bam, thank you mam! Move
on to the next sale to conquer.

I can see why nurses, teachers, and moms make the best
network marketers because of their caring and nurturing
abilities. My attitude used to be strictly business. No
warm and fuzzy stuff as I was a professional salesman and
didn't have time for that stuff. OMG! Was I so wrong!

I've had to learn all over again that this is a people
business and that is the key to success. Giving to people
to better their financial and health situations the best I
can. Yes! That requires me taking time to get to know the
unique individual that I'm dealing with and working totally
in the moment with no other distractions. Everyone's
situation is different and requires unique attention to
them. Believe it or not, it is all about the relationship
you build.

So back to the original point of this article; How has 25
years of sales and marketing helped me in the NWM/MLM
industry? It didn't! Well, not very much anyway. Trust
your gut. Do unto others as you would have them do unto
you. Keep the focus on the prospect's needs and wants.
Take yourself out of the equation in that your wants are
secondary. Just provide the information for them to make
an informed decision and collect a decision. No twisting,
manipulating, convincing, pressure, just good information.
Be patient and go with the flow of the prospect. That will
win you more than anything.

"Lose weight now, ask me how" was the familiar slogan you
may have seen around town in years past. What you may not
have known was that this catchy phrase was really
advertising Herbal Life products. The company has survived
litigation and the tragic death of its founder Mark Hughes
in 2000, twenty years after he started it. Since then, the
business has recovered and continues to grow worldwide
under new leadership. That it continues is a testimony to
the resilience of those involved in the company and the
ever expanding global opportunities that weight loss
industry offers; Americans alone are estimated to spend $50
billion a year on shedding pounds, and the forecast is for
continued growth.

Yet for all its ability to rebound and expand, this company
still has its share of doubters. Obviously it is not a
complete scam, or it would not exist today. But its
marketing tactics have led to past and present legal action
for misrepresentation and other unethical practices up the
line. On the other hand, there are more legal protections
in place because of the company's missteps, and it could be
that they have learned from the error of their ways.

Here's what the business looks like currently. The
compensation for these distributors follows the stair-step
breakaway plan. According to the company website, the
percentage of distributors that become supervisors is about
25 percent. These supervisors earned an average of $549 in
the year 2006 on top of their profits from selling the
products themselves. But how much do people typically earn
selling the products as distributors? That information is
not as easy to find. It seems that more than 90% of
distributors leave the business in the first year. Also,
supervisors must make an investment of several thousand
dollars to attain that rank, which the average supervisor
will not recover with $549 in income from the distributors
under them. So they too would need to sell the products
just to break even. The starting discount for the products
is 25%, which would be your commission if you sell them at
full price. The more you sell, and/or the higher your
rank, the greater your discount.

But how much a distributor can earn is not always clear and
reportedly subject to change. In at least one of the
lawsuits against the company, distributors alleged that the
company reduced the amount they would pay them without
clear reasons. They complained that the company was
showing favoritism and misleading them as to how much they
could earn. Such complaints are not uncommon.

The lesson seems to be that Herbal Life has learned how to
be one of the most resilient companies around. Throughout
its 28-year history there have been numerous complaints
about it misrepresenting itself to draw people to join the
sales team. The ways the company markets its opportunity
seem to be more transparent than before, but complaints
about distributors and investors being misled have not
slowed significantly. Thus it seems to still be a company
on ethically shaky ground. Anyone about to join the team
should be cautious, try to get clear written agreements,
and be prepared to take legal action if promises are broken.

Here is a simplified view of how the search engine
algorithms work:

Think of the engines like teachers handing out gold stars
(or check marks) for everything that you do well.

Google currently has about 200 factors in their algorithms
that determine how your site will rank.

The process they go through is the equivalent of the
teacher looking at your site and then looking at their
checklist and giving you a gold star for each of the things
that you do right.

However, some of the items on the list are more important
and you may get multiple gold stars.

No one knows for sure how the algorithm works, but we test
and monitor the industry to come up with a technique that
works well for getting sites ranked.

You should look at the foundation of the site first (we
call this search engine friendliness.)

This includes looking at the HTML that is used to build
your site and making sure there are no errors in the code,
and looking at how the site is built to make sure there is
nothing that will block the spiders.

Then you should look at on-page optimization, which is
tweaking the content for keyword density (increasing the
usage of keywords on the site), tweaking the Meta tags
(they are like a guide to each page that tells the search
engines what keywords are on the page and what the page is
about, and then use ALT tags, Header tags and various other
HTML tweaks.

You should also look at adding new content - as long as it
is informative and relevant and not just keyword stuffed
text that has no value.

You should do a sitemap, an XML sitemap (this is a
technical way of feeding your site to the engines so they
spider your content frequently).

You should work on obtaining quality links into your site
to boost your link popularity.

All of this is to drive the search engine spiders to your
site, so they can review it and hand out the gold stars.

The number of gold stars you achieve will determine how
well your site will rank.

There are no shortcuts; there are no tricks (none that are
safe to use and won't result in trouble down the road).

All you can do is make sure your on-page optimization and
links are in place and consistently work on growing your
site with relevant content.

You really don't need to submit to the engines these days,
especially not multiple times. Your XML sitemap set up and
submission will call Google and Yahoo, and the rest will

1.) You are not competing against search engines or even

2.) Get training from professionals whenever possible.
