In using and applying SEO (Search Engine Optimization ) to
get more traffic to any website, I am always testing new
ideas and tools that are provided to help you get the work
done faster.

In some cases these tools border on the line of what Google
approves of.

Recently I got to try one of these tools out. It was not a
free test but at $47.00 per month. The tool (or service
really) was around the concept of 3 way linking. 3 way
linking can be explained like this:

I have a 2 websites. (A and B) I want to get links to one
of these websites. I want one way links to my site.

So I contact a webmaster (site C) and ask if will link to
Website A, while I will link back to him from site B. Thus
creating a one way to my site.

Many times, webmasters will set up a second site, just for
this purpose. It's not a new concept. There are few
downfalls with this idea:

1. You may get a link from a junk site which has no traffic
2. Its hard to monitor 3. Its seen as linking purely for
search engine results 4. It's not hard for Google to find
5. Its time consuming to set up and monitor. 6. Most of the
time the second site is just another domain on the same
hosting which is not the best look (same IP address)

Recently a service was set up to cover these areas with
99% automation. The service allowed you to put one file on
your site, and over the period of 3 months, 250 links would
be generated from the other members of the service. It also
mixed up the link text too.

It would be humanly checked to ensure only quality sites
would be included. It could be used on up to 50 of your own
sites. The reason for the lag time for the links was to not
ring any alarm bells from the site which had zero links one
day and 250 links the next - making it look suspicious….

This service was provided and tested out with several beta
testers. The site actually had a link to email all of the
testers, so I contacted them to ask of what type of results
they got- most were happy apart from a couple who didn't
like the customer service.

So I applied to one site over the 3-month period. The site
had a ranking which was in the top 20 for it's keyword, I
just wanted to kick it up slightly ;) without doing the
work.

It was doing well in Yahoo, just not so well in Google.

I applied the tool and uploaded the single page to my site.
I also submitted a few sites of my own and had a couple
rejected for not enough content.

I was happy that the human edited part was working. I
watched as the sites were added to the new link page on my
site.

In checking my stats a few days later, I found that my site
have jumped up a little, not a lot but some. I was excited
that I had maybe found a way of helping my site rank better

Then within 30 days later, I found my site had dropped out
of Google. In giving the service a chance (and still
getting sales from Yahoo)- I left it, while I worked on
other projects.

At the 3 month point, I decide that this was not going to
work, I removed the file from my site and all parts of the
service was taken away. This was also around the same as a
google update was going on ( I was watching another site
jump up)

Within a few days my site again sat at Number 12 in Google.
It was trial and error- you have to try out new ideas to
see how they work out.

It may have been fine when it was first released however
Google is constantly changing. The final point is that my
page rank did not change but simply did not exist in the
top 10 K results.

Now the site had no other changes made to it. Also part of
the service was an article service tool, which I couldn't
get my head around how it worked.

In conclusion this was a test that had only one element
applied to it, if I had made other changes then maybe the
result may have been less than clear.

And what was the service?….. I can't say exactly the name
as I would rather not be directly attaching another
business…if you search for "3 way links" you may find it.

It's actually quite simple and doesn't have to cast you

rapport and back links. I personally find this to be a
very fun and rewarding learning experience. Once people

This article is not for everyone. If you have tons of cash
to spend hiring an SEO Keyword Analyst, don't waste your
time here. This is a down-in-the-trenches guide to doing
your own keyword research that will help revolutionize your
AdWords or other pay-per-click campaigns. If you'd like to
save a lot of money and don't mind spending an hour or two,
this is just what you need.

Ready to roll up your sleeves? Good!

Step 1: Grab a pad and pen and let's get busy. First, write
down what your website is about. I know it sounds too
simple but trust me - the basics you find here make all the
difference later!

Step 2: Now circle any words that you think people are
typing into search engines to find what your site offers.

Step 3: OK - Now let's use Google's AdWords keyword tool to
see what people are REALLY searching for. Go to
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and
type in one of your circled words. Does it come up? Is it
singular or plural? Do you see any similar words above the
one you typed in that will also work? If so, write them
down. Also check out the "Additional Keywords to Consider"
section at the bottom of the page.

Step 4: Find out what Google thinks your keywords should be
for any given web-page. Just click on the "Site-Related
Keywords" tab of that same Google AdWords web page and
enter your URL. If the keywords you selected earlier are
not at the top, consider either changing your page text or
redefining what your keywords should be.

Here's a sanity check. Take that sheet of paper you started
with and review what you wrote. This should be your
'baseline of vision.'

Step 5: Keep the AdWords tool open and also open a new
browser window. Go to Google and type in any one of your
keywords or keyword phrases. When the results come up,
check the number of matches found. This is your competition.

Step 6: Let's go back to the AdWords tool. Try to find some
good specific "keyword phrases" - Not just single keywords.
Here's what I mean... Let's say you have a page that deals
with flower delivery. Instead of "flowers", which has
233,000,000 competing pages on Google, try "send flowers",
which has 1/10th the number of competing pages. Better yet,
think like people speak (I.E./ I'm sending flowers to...)
As it turns out, a lot more people are searching for
"sending flowers" than are searching "send flowers" and
there's a lot less competition!

Recap: So what's the final score? Seven times less
competition with even more people searching? This is a HUGE
advantage. I'd say we have a winner. You can - and should -
do that for every keyword or phrase you plan to go after,
especially if you ever pay-per-click.

"spying and ethical stealing" of your competition's best
keywords, search Google for keyword tools. There are a ton
of them out there. I use a program called Keyword Elite. It

Welcome to part 1 of this 5 part series on Google
Adwords.Google AdWords is one of the best advertising tools
on the Internet, but only if you know how to implement
Adwords properly to achieve maximum potential. So what
exactly should you be doing to ensure that you get the best
possible results from Adwords?

We have put together the following tips to help you get
those all important click throughs and conversion rates.

1. Use targeted keywords

Never go with the full list of keywords that Google
suggests. Pick the keywords that closely match your
business. What would people search if looking for your
products. Time and time again we see unrelated keywords in
campaigns that companies run. For example, if you sell real
estate in Florida, don't buy the keywords 'Florida' or
'real estate', buy 'Florida real estate'. Simple,
effective, and won't waste your money. Keywords really are
the central hub of your success on AdWords. Take your time,
and read every tip below that has anything to do with
keywords before you start.

2. Search for the keywords that you are buying

Type the keywords into Google. See if your competitors are
showing. If the page that shows is unrelated to your
business then probably it is not a good search for you.

3. Get some keyword clues from your competitors

Companies that know what they are doing in the area of
search will have their page titles loaded with their best
keywords. Have a look at the good performers in your
market. See what keywords they are using in the page titles
(the text that appears in the top bar of the browser
window). If you are familiar with viewing the source of a
page, you can see the keywords they have placed in their
'keywords' META tag.

4. Use lots of keywords

Think of as many ways of saying your product or service as
you can. This will enable you to buy more specific
keywords. It is much better to buy a specific keyword such
as 'buy Reebok running shoes', than expect to catch this
search on a broad match of 'running shoes'.

5. Use keyword research tools

Google's tool is good in that it suggests similar searches.
Google's tool is available as you set up your AdWords
account. You type in a search and the tool will return
similar searches. Some of these will be irrelevant so be
careful.

Yahoo has a tool that allows you to type in your root term
and it shows searches that include this term. It also gives
exact search volumes on Yahoo for the previous month for
that term. It is an excellent tool when looking for
negative keywords

6. Use Global Negatives

If you're selling something, you don't want people finding
your ad when they're searching for free stuff. This sounds
obvious, but do some searches and you'll see it happening.
Use the word 'free' in your campaign global negatives. Add
any words you don't want your ad associated with to this
list. Using negative keywords is especially important if
you're using broad matching.

7. Create lots of ad groups

An ad group should contain a small number of keywords
(10-40) that are targeted around a certain theme. These
keywords will all show the same ad. Ad groups should be
created for dominant search terms, different product
groups, often individual products if they are well
searched. The choosing of ad groups and grouping of the
keywords is a difficult area so be prepared to restructure
your campaign after a couple of months because your first
attempt was not good.

8. Test different positions

How much of a difference will being in the first position,
as opposed to the second, third or sixth position make, for
your net profit? The answer is that it depends on your
creative, industry and who else is bidding on your
keywords. Test your creative in each position and work out
where it will be most effective, from an ROI point of view.
Remember also that the AdWords ranking algorithm works on a
bid price x CTR (click through rate) basis (it's actually
more complicated than that, but this gives an idea as to
why out of two ads with similar bids, one will be higher
because of a higher CTR).

9. Test different creatives

You can also test your creatives (the ad text). Write two
or three different ads and Google will rotate them in this
ad group. The creative that gives you the highest ROI is
the one you should go with. You need to give the test long
enough to produce statistically significant results. How
long this is depends on the search volume and the number of
conversions you achieve. Use common sense as to when you
think the results show that one ad is better than the
others unless you know your stats.

10. Rotate ads evenly

In your campaign settings one of the options is to rotate
ads evenly or to have Google optimize for you and show
better performing ads more frequently. The default setting
is for Google to optimize. Change it! Google optimizes
based on clicks, not conversions. In other words, it shows
the ad that brings Google the most money, not you. Many
times we see ads that have lower click through rates
getting a better ROI because they appeal to buyers, whereas
other ads with higher click through rates appeal to the
masses.
