Gone are the days of cheap banner ad and pop up traffic.
It is becoming increasingly harder to develop good traffic
sources, and even more traffic and more highly targeted
traffic is needed as web searching becomes faster. It is
not unfathomable to click through 20 or 30 or even 50
websites in 20 minutes, searching for exactly what you are
looking for. As more people get hi-speed internet, I
believe it will be even more difficult to keep a customer
on your site. Only the very best will survive--are you
ready?

Today I will cover some of the best techniques that are
currently available and how to maximize your return on
each, and literally generate more traffic than you can
handle.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC): PPC is extremely popular today among
internet marketers because it circumvents the search engine
optimization process. You literally buy your way to the
top of the list when you buy PPC. Two keys here: 1) You
must be highly targeted. If you only sell specialized
hunting equipment for elk hunting, you cannot afford to buy
"hunting" or "fishing" as keywords. You must buy "elk
hunting". You won't get as many clicks, but they should
cost you less and they will convert at a much higher rate
than the general terms. 2) Do not bid your way to the
very top of the list. You will pay too much for the spot.
You see, the first spot gets a lot of clicks from "happy
clickers"--they click in to your site, and if it isn't
exactly what they want or doesn't load fast enough, they
click right back out--leaving you with the bill for their
click. But if you bid the 3rd or 5th spot, it is less
expensive, and the people clicking on those ads are more
likely to be genuinely reading your ad to see if it is what
they want.

Article Writing and Submission: Article writing and
submission creates some of the most highly targeted traffic
possible, as long as you write specifically to your
purchasing web site audience. One thing that is incredibly
powerful with this is the emotional connection a reader
develops with the style of writing in the article.
Therefore, it is important that the copywriter for your web
site also be the writer for your articles, if at all
possible. The style of writing is one of the things that
prompts a reader to click through to your web site, and if
the style remains the same, you are more likely to create a
customer out of the click.

Ezine Advertising: One of the keys with ezine advertising
is targeted ezines. The more tightly targeted the topic of
the ezine, and the more highly correlated that topic is
with your web site, the higher the chance that you will be
productive using that ezine. Another key with ezine
advertising is testing and tracking. You must track every
source. Create a spreadsheet and put in each of the
sources, the price you paid for the ad, and the number of
leads or sales you generate. If you do not do this, you
will likely fail at ezine advertising. Some ezines will

Now, don't get me wrong - SEO is an important part of any
marketing strategy. But to think about basing your whole
marketing strategy around SEO and hope that Google will
send you traffic, and continue to send you traffic, means
you've got the mindset for running a business completely
wrong. You're doomed to failure!

But Don't Worry; It's Not Your Fault! Here's What You Need
to Understand

Without going into keyword research & testing strategies
and how to build a website around it, this is much more
important.

The qualities needed to set up and run a successful online
or offline business today, are exactly the same as it was
15, 50 or 2,000 years ago ....long before the internet
existed. Determination, persistence, burning desire,
continuous self improvement, hard work,continuous
education, testing & measuring, smart marketing etc, etc.

This still applies to running a business online!

journey of self discovery and improvement before success
and happiness can be fully realised.

Most people are actually more scared of success than failure

Why do you think everyone spends all their spare time,
hours, days, weeks on social networking sites like
Facebook, online chatting, gaming, forums, blogs? The
answer is, the same reason they watch Eastenders, Dallas or
Coronation Street. It's not only to escape from their
mundane lives but it's to exonerate them selves from any
responsibility.

Don't get me wrong, some of this website stuff is fun. I do
like Facebook because it saves me time and makes it easier
to keep in touch with old friends. But spending all your
free time watching crap TV or on social websites is the
equivalent of sticking your head in the sand.

In the famous words of the great Scottish comedian, actor,
musician, Billy Connolly when asked by chat show host
Michael Parkinson;

"So Billy, as someone who came from a poor working class
background in Glasgow, an abused child with very little
education, how did you get to become so obviously very
talented & hugely successful?"

"Well" he replied "I didn't get it sitting watching the Des
O'Connor show"

That sums it all up for me!

So the point is, if you spent one hour a day, every day,
learning about marketing and the secrets of setting up an
online business, instead of hiding, how long would it be
before you could resign from your job? 3-6 months I bet!

How many people are prepared to do this? Very few, (which
is just as well)

It would be wrong for me to say it's easy to make money
online, but it's fair to say that it's easier now than it
ever was to start your own business..... IF.....and only
IF....you're prepared to commit, educate yourself and to
keep learning! These days, you don't even have to leave the
house or spend days in the library researching different
markets to get started (although you should maybe try it)

Any successful business (online or offline) must be built
upon a series of proven marketing strategies.............at
least ten!

SEO can be done last only when all the other strategies are
in place.

So let's get back to basics. If you really want to have
your own successful business, you must start with working
on your on self-image to convince yourself that you deserve
success and then develop the confidence within yourself to
take on the responsibility necessary to succeed.

I have read numerous books on this subject of self
improvement so I'll save you a few years of trial, error &
frustration by recommending THE book you must get which
will change your life. It changed mine.....most other books
I read didn't make much of an impact.

Run a search on Amazon for "The New Psycho-Cybernetics" by
Maxwell Maltz and get your attitude and mindset ready for

Most people are pretty good about getting their webpages
optimized, however most people are missing an opportunity
with other content. Keep reading to find out if you are
too.

Most people don't realize this, but you can actually
optimize a PDF document.

A lot of my content is in PDF format. All my white papers
are PDF, as well as my newsletters.

Why?

- PDF content will look good on everyone's screen, unlike
web pages where you have to consider various different
settings and resolutions.

- PDFs are often downloaded to people's desktop and
therefore have a longer "shelf life" ' they may come across
the PDF in the future, but with a web page (even a
bookmarked one) they are not likely to accidentally come
across it again. They would have to actively go to your
site to see the page again.

There are many other "pluses" for PDFs.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all content should
be in PDF. It definitely should not be. But there is
value to a PDF and it has its place within your content and
your marketing plans.

There are ways you can make your PDF more search engine
friendly to get maximum benefit out of it. Here are some
of the steps:

1. Make sure your PDFs are text based. Using images is
just fine, but don't make the actual content within your
PDF an image. Use images to enhance your content and
illustrate your points.

2. Complete the document properties. Most people are
unaware that this is an important step.

The most important property is the Title.

The Title property, if present, typically represents the
words that will be displayed as the heading of the search
result. It's the equivalent to the html title tag.

If you don't complete the Title property, the search engine
is going to generate a title from the PDF's content, and it
may not be what you would choose ' it may not be compelling
or use your keywords well.

3. Use keywords within your content. It's just like a web
page, you want good keyword usage. You should never spam
or stuff your keywords in any of your content, but you do
want to make sure you use them well.

4. Build links into PDFs. Make sure you include links in
your PDFs, and pay attention to the anchor text used.
Search engines do recognize these links.

5. Don't get caught up in "versionitis" ' which means don't
get too hung up on making sure you have the very latest
version as soon as it comes out. Search engines do "read"
and index PDFs, their capabilities tend to lag behind with
the new versions of Acrobat. Although Acrobat 8 is out, for
now you should save your PDFs as version 1.6 (Acrobat 7) or
lower to ensure search engines can index the content.

6. It's true boys and girls - size does matter. You can
"optimize" the size of your file, so it isn't too big and
annoying for the engines and users to download. If you
have the full version of Acrobat you simply Select
Advanced>PDF Optimizer. You may also want to enable the
"Optimize for Fast Web View" option in the
Preferences>General Settings panel. This allows the PDF to
be "loaded" a page at a time, rather than waiting for the
whole PDF to download.

7. Don't forget to tag your PDFs You can add tags to your
PDFs, similar to html tags. With your PDF open (while using
the full version of Acrobat) select
Advanced>Accessibility>Add Tags to Document.

Consider how PDFs may help your marketing and search
efforts and start implementing them following the above
guidelines.

A split test is a wonderful tool that marketers use to
increase their conversion ratios, their sales and their
profits from their marketing efforts. I can pretty much
guarantee you that if you aren't using split tests in your
marketing approach that you are quite literally throwing
money away. Split tests are used both in the offline
marketing world as well as in the online internet marketing
world.

So what exactly is a split test?

A split test is a technique used to create the most
profitable marketing message by testing various components
of that message to maximize the effectiveness of each
component. Here's an example that should make the concept
clearer to understand.

Let's say you create a brand new ebook that you want to
sell online. However, you really don't know how much you
should charge for that ebook. You can use a split test to
figure out exactly how much you should charge. Here's what
you do.

Create two versions of your web page that is selling the
ebook. On one version you can put the lower price and on
the second version you can put the higher price. You then
want to send the exact amount of traffic to both versions
to see which version of the page performs best. The lower
price page might generate more sales and more profit than
the higher price page. The lower price page might generate
more sales, but less profit than the higher price page.
Sometimes, believe it or not, the higher price page might
generate more sales and more profit than the lower price
page.

Why is it important to split test? By split testing, you
identify what works best in your marketing approach so that
you can maximize sales and profits in your business. For
example, let's say the higher price page generated more
sales and more profit than the lower price page. If you
would have just went with the lower price without split
testing the different price points, you would have lost out
on a lot of money.

There are many different components of your marketing
message that you can split test. You can split test the
price, the headline content, the headline color, background
color, graphics vs. no graphics, an opt in before the sales
page vs. just a sales page. You can split test video vs.
no video or audio vs. no audio. Be creative and you will
be able to come up with tons of different components in
your marketing approach that you can split test.

Once you do a split test and you come up with a winner, the
next thing you want to do is identify another component
that you can test or come up with another variance of the
component that you tested previously. For instance let's
say the price that you tested was $37 vs. $67 and $37 won.
Maybe you might want to test $37 vs. $47. The reason why
is because the $37 price might outperform the $67 price,
but the $47 price outperforms the $37. Wouldn't you want
to know that you can charge $10 more for your ebook?

By implementing split testing into your marketing efforts,
you would be amazed at what you can discover. Not only can
these principles be used for your existing marketing plan,
you can take your discoveries and use them on new projects
that you might work on, thus saving time and money in the
process.

having one online is so much easier than a bricks and
mortar store. However, there are pros and cons to each, and

anyone interested in opening an online bookstore in their
own carefully researched niche.

Finding your carefully researched niche is important for
several reasons. With the likes of Amazon and Barnes and
Noble as competition, you have to carve out a very specific
small piece of the online bookstore pie and serve it with
whipping cream. By that I mean, you have to create a very
focused smaller bookstore that offers something that bigger
websites don't have - a very warm, personal touch.

The Pros of Owning an Online Bookstore

I have chosen affiliate programs as the basis of my
bookstore because I don't have to deal with receiving
payments, accepting credit cards, processing orders,
storing inventory, taking back orders, shipping, and so on
and on.

I have my own website, customized and under my control, I
don't have to dress up, do my hair, makeup etc. to go to
work, my store is open 24/7/365 to customers around the

then don't need to leave my website to make their purchases.

The Cons of Owning an Online Bookstore

Of course there are always arguments against shopping
online; the cons are that bookstores are lovely places to
visit. There are book signings, readings, and the joy of
finding a few interesting books, taking them to a
comfortable chair, and giving them a good look before
deciding whether to purchase. And of course, online sites
malfunction more often than stores have to unexpectedly
close.

As an affiliate marketer there are some things that can
make online shoppers annoyed, reluctant and skeptical that
you won't have to deal with personally, but you will have
to be convincing enough to overcome their hesitation.

If your customer knows exactly what they want, no problem,
but if they want to "window shop" the process can be
painfully slow as they move from page to page. If they like
to "scan and let something pop out at them", they can
become frustrated at only being able to view what fits on
one page at a time.

When it's time to pull out the plastic, they may question
the security of ordering with their card online, wonder if
they want to pay high shipping costs, and what happens if
they need to return an order?

How I Made My Decision

Most of the cons can be compensated for or avoided by
careful choosing of affiliate programs. Few online book
companies simply offer books. They also offer reviews,
contests, coupons, and ways to participate in what feels
like a community.

Website design with care taken to make navigation clear and
simple can make browsing and comparison shopping easier,
and of course stores with great track records,
testimonials, and security in place make all the difference
with consumer confidence.

For me, love of my niche combined with love of books
convinced me that I'd made a great choice, and success is
almost assured as my next love, writing, makes it easy to
