Traffic Tactics I Use For MyInternetBusiness

Traffic Tactics I Use For MyInternetBusiness
Generating strong traffic sources is critical to the
success of your internet business. No matter how strong
your sales page is, how effective your close, or how
wonderful your product is, if you don't have traffic, no
one knows it. And if no one sees your product, no one will
purchase it.

The quality of your traffic is also paramount. Low quality
traffic such as guaranteed traffic, exit traffic, pop-up
traffic, or pop-under traffic generally produce very low
returns. Managed correctly, these sources of traffic can
create a positive return on investment, but in most cases
you will need more qualified traffic to make sales.

My favorite source of traffic is article-writing and
submission. With article writing and submission, you will
write articles related to the topic of your online product,
and submit these articles to various article directories.
The article directories publish your articles, and
webmasters can publish your articles on their web sites and
in their ezines and online newsletters. When an interested
buyer reads your article, they can click through to your
site via a link you will place at the end of the article
(just like you should do when you finish reading this
article). You will direct the reader to your web site,
which will promote your product.

Done correctly, this form of traffic generation is
extremely effective.

So, how do you do it?

1) Write an article about a topic that would interest your
typical purchaser. For example, in this case, my typical
purchaser is looking to make more money online. Traffic
generation is of interest to people who want to make more
money online. Your article must be both informative and
easy to read. Do not feel that just because it is a free
article, that you need to give them very little
information. Actually teach your reader something they
don't know. They want to see that you have something to
offer before they purchase your paid product, and the
article is a great way to introduce yourself and your
knowledge, to them. Note: proofread your article, or have
someone read it for you. It is a waste of time to write
articles with spelling and grammar mistakes; the editors
will often reject your article for publication in their
directory if there are spelling and grammar errors.

2) Include a section at the end of your article that tells
the reader a little about you and your expertise. In this
section, include a clickable link to your web site, so that
interested readers can click through to your web site to
learn more about you and your product.

3) Submit your article to some of the major article
directories. Type in "article submission" or "article
directories" into your favorite search engine to find a
list of directories.

4) Start the process over again. Write many articles and
submit them to many directories. Keep in mind, you are not
the only person writing articles online; in fact, in the
last few months, article writing has had exponential
growth.

5) Once you have submitted your articles to a number of
directories, you should begin to see a dramatic increase in
traffic.

How To Be A Successful Affiliate Marketer

How To Be A Successful Affiliate Marketer
Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting the goods
or services of another person in exchange for getting a
commission every time that one of those goods or services
is sold.Affiliate marketing in this way can be a very easy
way for a person to get something done and when it comes
right down to it the low cost and easy time commitments
that affiliate marketing brings to the table are exactly
what people need when they are starting up a
business. However, this does not mean that everyone that
tries affiliate marketing is going to be successful at it,
so even though it is one of the easiest ways to start a
business online, you still need to know how to win at
affiliate marketing.Location In real estate, location is
the biggest thing. In affiliate marketing, location is also
the biggest thing albeit in a different way.The location we
are looking for in affiliate marketing is not the location
of geography or region that real estate developers are
interested in, but rather the location affiliate markets
are looking for is the proper market to sell their
products.Markets are targeted to different things and
interested in different things and figuring out which
markets are likely to like the products you are marketing
is part of becoming a great affiliate marketer. You can make
things a lot easier on yourself by ensuring that the
affiliate marketing that you do is only directed at markets
and people that are actually interested in those particular
products.

Leverage

There is a very sad story in some affiliate marketing
circles and it is the story of the person that did not
understand leverage. This person came up with a fantastic
marketing plan for affiliate marketing and tried it on one
product. That plan worked great, but because the profits
that it brought in were not enough to sustain a full time
income, the person gave up and heartbreakingly went back to
their old job. What is the lesson here? The lesson is
that people need to consider leverage when they consider
how to win at affiliate marketing.Figuring out a strategy
that works is hard, but once you have that strategy your
next goal becomes to leverage the strategy by applying it
to as many different products as possible. If you can make
$100 a week selling a certain product, why not start
building up your infrastructure so that you end up making
$10,000 a week eventually by selling 100 products that each
make $100 a week?

Critical Thinking

Location and leverage are two examples of things that came
about as a result of critical thinking.Someone was faced
with a problem (too few people interested in the general
public or too little profit from selling one product) and
came up with a solution by thinking on their
feet.Everything that you do in affiliate marketing will
require this type of critical thinking and it would be
impossible to go through the hundreds of different ways
that this is already true of the field.Just remember to
always re-evaluate the situation you are in and try to
think critically about ways that you can make it better.

What You Should Know About E-Courses

What You Should Know About E-Courses
In today's society, the internet is no longer just used for
shopping or entertainment, it is also used for learning.
Over the past few years, online eCourses have rapidly
increased in popularity. What does this mean for you? This
means that if are an article writer, you can easily build
off this popularity. You can do this by making eCourses
with your articles.

Before examining how you can go about making eCourses with
articles, it is best to quickly familiarize yourself with
eCourses, namely what they are. Just as they sound,
eCourses are courses that are offered online. These
courses, which are often hosted over the internet, enable
internet users to get an education or familiarize
themselves with something new, often right from the comfort
of their own homes. Although eCourses have similar goals,
to educate internet users, those goals are accomplished in
different ways. There are some individuals who are
considered experts in their field, such as the field from
working from home. Many experts create eCourses and
distribute them online for other internet users to benefit
from. eCourses are also offered by many colleges and
universities as a way to get an education from home.

Now that you know exactly what eCourses are, you can better
understand how you make an eCourse. If you have never
taken or viewed an eCourse before, you may not realize that
they are just collections of information, just like
articles. In fact, that is why making your own eCourse may
be a lot easier that you had originally anticipated. The
way that you can create your own eCourse can vary, but many
article writers just take a collection of articles and
combine them together. Of course, you will want to combine
them in a way in which they are easy to read, helpful, and
connected. For instance, if you are interested in making
an eCourse that focuses on working from home, you will
first want to explain what working from home is before
outlining various work at home opportunities, and so forth.

Once you have successfully created an eCourse, your next
step will all depend on your goals. For instance, is your
goal to make money with your eCourse or is your goal to
generate traffic for your website? If your goal is to
generate traffic for your website, you may want to think
about offering your eCourse materials free of charge. Many
webmaster paste their eCourse materials on their website,
for easy viewing, but others use it as email content. If
you use your eCourse material as email content, you are
essentially creating and distributing a newsletter.
Newsletters are another one of the many highly rated and
recommend internet marketing tactics that webmasters use.

If you are not a webmaster, just a professional article
writer, you may be interested in using your eCourse to
generate sales. If so, there are a couple of different
approaches that you can take. For the fastest results, you
may want to consider selling your eCourse to an individual
or company who can effectively promote it. This will, in
turn, generate income for both parties involved. If do
have the time to market and promote your own eCourse, you
may want to examine selling it on your own. As it was
previously mentioned, a large number of webmasters offer
similar eCourses free of charge. Despite this free
competition, you may still be able to make a substantial
profit from selling your eCourse material, even if you make
it available for a low price.

Whichever way you decide to use your material, you are
still advised to make an eCourse with your articles. After
all, what else would you do with your articles? Making an
eCourse is a great way to put your old, unused articles to
good use.

5 Steps to Make Money Online with Affiliate Programs

5 Steps to Make Money Online with Affiliate Programs
It can be easy to make a good income with affiliate
programs. You don't need a marketing degree or a college
degree to do it. In fact, affiliate programs are an
excellent way to make money online for anyone, and it can
be easy to do if you follow some key steps.

Step One - Find a company with a product or service you
have some knowledge of, or passion for. Don't take on a
product or service that you have neither knowledge of, nor
passion for. There is too much competition out there that
may cause you to fail. Normally you will sign up at the
company's website. If they don't manage their own affiliate
programs you might be registering at an affiliate
management site such as Commission Junction or ClickBank.
There, you will be given your own unique ID# as an
affiliate of the company which will allow you to sell its
products online through its affiliate program.

Step Two - Take advantage of any promotional tools that the
affiliate program may have. This will cut down on the time
you would spend making your own. Most good companies will
have a variety of marketing tools for you. Learn all you
can about the product or service. In fact, the best plan
would be for you to join as a customer and use the product
or service, as this may afford you an insight into the
product and company which most of the other affiliates will
not have, and would give you a competitive edge to attract
buyers.

Step Three - Set up your own blog or website and advertise
your product with a link to the company's site that
includes your affiliate ID# so you can be given credit for
each sale. When people click on your blog or website, they
will see the advertisement for the product or service
you're representing and when they click the link to go to
the company website, you will be given credit if they buy
the product or service.

Step Four - Market yourself through your blog or website.
With a blog you can write personal, newsy messages and you
go a step further by keyword enhancing them to give your
page more relevance in search engine return results. It's a
great way to "soft sell" the public on your affiliate
program items. If you don't want to use a blog, set up a
website. Successful websites are low-key in design using
low graphics and light colors.

Another great way to market yourself is to write articles
about your service or product you're selling. Use a product
review style and post them on any of the free article
databases out there with a link back to your site.

Step 5 - Keep track of all the Affiliate Programs you have
signed up for, with special emphasis on which ad or article
is giving the best conversion, i.e., which is sending most
BUYERS to the company's website.

Concentrate on the best conversion rates, and TEST, TEST,
TEST, your ads by tweaking them and measuring how the
conversion rate changes.

When a sale is made, you will be given credit as long as
your affiliate ID# was associated with the sale. If you
market hard and consistently, you stand to make a good deal
of money online through affiliate programs. That's the
sheer beauty of using online affiliate programs.

Now that you know the potential for making money online
with affiliate programs, sign up for some affiliate
programs to represent products or services that you have
knowledge of, or a passion for and that you feel have a
mass appeal. It's not too late to get in on one of the
fastest and easiest moneymaking opportunities you can find
to make money online.

Home Business: What's in a Name?

Home Business: What's in a Name?
When you decide to start a home business you may or may not
have your own product to sell. If not you may simply become
an affiliate and sell someone else's product for a
commission or you can become a distributor for a network
marketing company. Either way there are many reasons to
have a separate and distinct name for your new home
business.

Reselling product

There are many schools of thought on this. Some will ague
that the product company has done all the work for you and
that you should simply use their sales page, their landing
page and their provided URL.

This may seem like a good idea when you join, having a
ready made business with all the hard stuff done for you
but using the same thing everyone else is using can be
detrimental to your success. Lots of exposure is good for
demand, but when you look like everyone else it's hard to
compete for those highly desired prospects.

It doesn't take people long to figure out those company
generated URL's. Any company who has a system that can be
duplicated will have a standard looking URL. It's a perfect
give away in any of your advertising. There has also been
some fraudulent activity recently with people high-jacking
the number and reaping the benefits of the sale.

Business entity

When starting a home based business you always want to keep
your business activities separate from your personal. This
shows the IRS you are operating a serious business not a
hobby. It also protects your personal finances from
becoming part of any law suit.

So what's in a name? McDonalds, Starbucks, Donald Trump,
all very recognizable names. Why? Branding....

As your business grows you want to have a personal brand.
Network Marketing companies come and go. If you're known
only by the product you're selling, and then if they should
go out of business so do you.

Also any SEO expert will tell you that those sales pages
are not well designed for top search engine rankings and
that because there are so many of them you are penalized
for duplicate content.

I mentioned above the URL problem. Having your own domain
name that is catchy and well optimized for the keywords of
your niche can boost your ability to rank higher on Google.

So as you begin the development of your home based business
you should give considerable thought to how you want to be
known on the Internet. Creating a site that offers good
pertinent advice in your niche gives you creditability in
the eyes of your prospects. It also gives you flexibility
to mix and match offers. You can offer affiliate programs,
as well as selling your own products giving your buyers
multiple choices.

Creating a brand image for your company is not something
that happens quickly. It takes time to build relationships.
But in the end you will have loyal buyers who trust your
opinion and will continue to buy from you time and time
again.

4 White Lies Of Network Marketing

4 White Lies Of Network Marketing
Have you ever heard anything like this from somebody in
network marketing?

-We have the best COMPANY!

-Our PRODUCT is miraculous!

-The TIMING is amazing!

-Our COMP PLAN is the best in the industry!

Interesting, huh? Every company in network marketing says
the exact same crud! Somehow, the spin doctors in each
company can convince their distributors that all of these
things are ONLY in place in their company!

I'm still waiting for somebody to tell me, "Well, you
should have been here three years ago when we were really
hummin'..." or "Our company is really going through a tough
patch right now BUT..."

So here's the deal: none of those things really means squat
to you or me anyway.

Obviously, the company has to be solvent, the products need
to be good, etc., but most people can figure that stuff out
for pretty easily, with just a little research.

The real question is can YOU achieve YOUR GOALS with your
company? For example, I used to be with a great company,
and they could sing the song as good as anybody, but I
couldn't succeed with their system! It sucked! Here it is
in a nutshell:

-Make a list of people you know

-Get them a company magazine or DVD

-Follow up by inviting them to a local meeting

-Rinse and repeat

And what happened after you gave your whole list a magazine
or DVD?! What next? The company was strangely silent on
that one... other than vague talk about the "3 foot rule"
(talking to any stranger unfortunate enough to get within 3
feet of you) Yuck! I'm a lousy cold market prospector, and
besides, I don't WANT to have to discuss my business with
every stranger out there as part of my recruiting strategy.
Most strangers I meet (and my friends and family too, for
that matter) aren't good marketers anyway.

So I turned my attention to ONLINE network marketing. I
then went out and found the right company FOR ME. Not
according to their criteria, but according to mine.

Here's the list I made of what I was looking for:

1. Strong, compelling web-sites.

2. A great value product (affordable).

3. Low or no sign up fee.

4. An Exclusive "Non Me Too" product.

5. Compensation plan that pays on ALL volume.

6. Single Product Focus.

7. Easy to do.

I went out and found that company, went to work, and built
a team of about 1,000 people in just over a year! In my
previous company it took THREE years just to get a group of
400 people.

So stop listening to all the hype out there and decide what
you personally need in a network marketing company, and go
and find that. If your experience is like mine, you'll then
find the business much easier, fun, and profitable!

Internet Marketing - The Online Revolution

Internet Marketing - The Online Revolution
There is no doubt that the Internet has changed our lives
dramatically. From the way we shop, to corresponding
through email, the internet has definitely revolutionized
the way we live.

This is probably no greater evidenced than by the home
based business industry. The Internet revolution offered up
a variety of different methods for people to make money
online. So how has this change been possible and how can
you take advantage of it?

The Internet's Appeal

What makes the Internet so attractive to work from home
entrepreneurs? The simple answer is the its ease of use.
There is no simpler way for people to seek, search,
analyze, compare, and then finally buy online. The most
appealing aspect to many is that you can do it all from the
comfort of your own home.

Increased Earning Potential

The increase in online trade has created increased earning
potential for many online marketers. Because of this,
people are outsourcing divisions of labor within their own
companies through connections they have made online. This
has created a population within that supports the online
work from home community.

Take Back Control

One of the most important aspects of the online revolution
is that it has allowed us to take back control of our
lives. Where we once had to be at the office at a certain
hour, we now have the flexibility to work our own schedules.

Not only do you now get to set your own hours, but you also
get to choose your work. Based on your individual strengths
and assets, you can choose your area of interest and find
your own niche. This increases productivity as you are more
passionate about your work. The more productive you can be,
the more income you will be able to earn.

Equal Opportunity

Internet marketing destructs any possible barriers of
prejudice based on age, sex, disability, or race. The
online world has done away with the bias that you might
normally experience in the traditional business
environment. Your work will be recognized on its merits,
rather than on your skin type or lack of physical
disability.

In conclusion, internet marketing has revolutionized the
way that we do business today. With the added flexibility,
increased earning potential, and endless options for
finding potential clients, you would be missing a
potentially life changing opportunity by not finding your
place online. With all of the opportunities available to
you, you can find something that will meet your individual
needs.

Enter Data Online From The Comfort of Your home

Enter Data Online From The Comfort of Your home
A very well known search is done by many people online when
they go to the major search engines. It is an opportunity
that anyone can take advantage of. It is called "Data Entry
From Home". This is one the best at home opportunities for
anyone looking to make extra money from home on the
internet. It is not like those "too good to be true" income
opportunities that are found on the web. It is the real
deal.

Now, data entry from home is not the only search that is
done online when someone is searching for this kind of
income generator. Many times, people will also use other
terms such as online data entry, data entry at home, data
entry online, data entry opportunity, and work at home data
entry.

I see a lot of people who just want to make a little extra
money and this fits them perfect. others just want to
somehow replace their current income generator which is
their jobs and move on to better things in life. I also
find people who have good and successful businesses offline
and see that making money online is what they also want to
take as a challenge to make money.

The reason why I think more and more people, who are
surfing online, want to get into a this kind of opportunity
is because of the cost. A regular offline or online
business can cost a lot of money. It may require a person
to invest a large amount of their money just to start. With
this kind of opportunity, the cost can be so very low.
Prices range from $35-$55 to start-up. Once someone signs
up and pays the small fee, the info that they will get is
so good that if they take action, do what ever they need to
do, have a computer and the desire to make it, then they
will succeed. It is really that simple.

Now, I am not saying that you should get into anything that
you find online. You need to know that many of these "enter
data from home" programs are really scams. The people on
the other side really care about one thing and that is to
get you to send them money. Once they get it, they walk
away without giving you anything in return.

One of the best things to do is to find a program that you
found on the search engine, and see what others say about
them. How do you do that? You can go to the many work at
home forums and ask other users what they think about the
program that you chose.

These companies will give you everything that you need to
succeed and earn money on the internet from home.

Once you find a good program and you joined it, make sure
to take your time to follow the instructions in it. I see a
lot of people who want to go as fast as they can to read
all the info and get so overwhelmed. So take your time,
take action, and you will succeed.

Are You An Internet Worker or Internet Marketer

Are You An Internet Worker or Internet Marketer
Once you start checking everything out you quickly realize
there are many different ways to make Money on the
Internet. What does get confusing is trying to find the
best way that fits your goals and your personality. In
this article we want to talk about whether you are an
Internet worker, or an Internet marketer, and how that can
affect your ability to make money on the Internet.

Let me give you an example using and often search phrase
paid surveys. An Internet worker is somebody who wants to
complete surveys and get paid for their efforts. An
Internet marketer is someone who wants to sell the paid
survey opportunity. Do you see the difference?

Maybe this will make it a little bit clearer. In the 1800's
the great gold rush produced people from all across the
country looking to cash in on this newfound wealth
opportunity. What is surprising is the people that made the
most money were not the miners, but were the general stores
selling tools.

The people that went out every day panning for gold for the
most part did not strike it rich. The owners of the general
store, made all kinds of money selling picks, pans, axes,
and whatever else the panhandlers needed to do their work.

This same philosophy still applies today. There is nothing
wrong with being an Internet worker. An Internet worker
would be somebody who's interested in doing a job on the
Internet.

There are more opportunities cropping up every day for
telecommuting work company where a business will pay you to
work for them from the comfort of your own home. You are
just not making a daily commute to the office everyday.

Another example of an Internet worker would be someone who
is interested in doing data entry and typing at home. The
Internet marketer is the person selling the reports and
e-books on how to make money and where to find companies
interested in working with you to type at home for them.

Another type of person who is an Internet marketer is
someone who wants to start their own Internet business.
These people are willing to take the time to learn the
skills that it takes to become successful marketing online.
They are more entrepreneurial in spirit.

They must learn to do things like build a website, start a
blog, get traffic and visitors, build a list to do e-mail
marketing, and so on. A popular way that this is done is
through creating their own products, joining a home
business opportunity, selling private label right products,
affiliate marketing, and so on.

The Internet worker is not interested in taking the time to
learn these skills. What they want is a majorable results
right away. They know that if they fill out a survey for
five dollars they are going to get paid five dollars. They
also understand that their money is directly proportional
to the amount of work they are doing at the present time.

It is important that you clearly define what your goals are
when you go online looking for ways to make money. There is
nothing wrong with being an Internet worker or being an
Internet marketer. The important thing is that you do not
waste your time trying to do something that does not appeal
to you.

I have seen many Internet workers trying to start their own
Internet marketing business and fail because they really do
not care about acquiring the necessary skills. I've also
seen many Internet marketers waste their time doing surveys
for one dollar apiece when they really were interested in
building a business on the Internet.

In the end it really comes down to you doing what you want
to do. The important thing is that you understand whether
you are an Internet worker or an Internet marketer. Then
take the necessary steps to become successful at whatever
choice you make.

Some Great Ways To Get Website Traffic for Free

Some Great Ways To Get Website Traffic for Free
Regardless of how good your website is, how good your sales
copy is, how good or attractive your product is, unless you
generate traffic you will never make money online. This
article is going to cover some ways for you to drive
traffic to your website for free.

Now, if you are like many others you simply don't have the
spare cash to pay out to someone to drive traffic to your
website for you. So, you must be willing to learn and put
in some effort in understanding what you need to do to get
traffic for free. Be prepared because it will take work and
you will need to commit to it at the beginning. Once you
have mastered the techniques, you can start to ease off
some as many of the techniques will start to work on
auto-pilot for you.

Being able to get website traffic for free will take a
little time to build up. Without question, paying for
traffic will get you instant results, but it is very
important you learn how to get traffic for free. Believe
me, it is a great feeling when you get tons of traffic to
your site, and you know you haven't paid a penny for it!

The first place you should look at to get traffic for free
is in forums. Depending on what you are selling, or what
your website is offering I guarantee you there is a forum
on the subject somewhere. Search out and find those forums
using the search engines. Check them out, see what people
are writing about or commenting on. Sign up to those forums
for free and start answering questions at first without
blatantly advertising your website. Within a short space of
time, you will begin to get reputation in the forum as
being an expert. Once you are recognized as an expert, you
can then start adding your signature to all your comments.

You will be amazed at the amount of traffic this will
generate for you. The major benefit is that the traffic
visiting your site will be highly targeted and much more
likely to either optin to your newsletter, or indeed
purchase your product.

Set up your own squeeze page or capture page and offer a
newsletter full of content on your niche or subject. It is
advisable to send all your traffic to your squeeze page and
build your own mailing list. When people optin, give them
high quality content. Make it enjoyable to read and many of
your subscribers will then begin to tell their friends
about you. This itself will bring you more free traffic.

Contact other website owners that have similar products to
what you are selling. Ask them if they are interested in
swapping or trading links. Most webmasters realize the
importance of this and most will agree providing you are
not selling the same product of course. Exchanging links
will help to increase your search engine rankings which
will in time bring you more free traffic.

Writing articles of course will bring you a lot of traffic
over time. The most important thing is your articles need
to be original and full of quality content giving the
reader exactly the information they are looking for.
Providing your articles are of a high standard, you will
get a lot of free traffic over time.

You will need to write up as many articles as possible over
a short period of time. The more the better basically.
Submitting these articles can be done for free also. There
are thousands of article directories online where you can
sign up for free and submit your article. One small tip
here is to make sure you do not submit the same article to
all of the directories as this will be classified as
duplicate content and have a negative effect on your search
engine raking. Simply change the article around and make it
more than 30% different and then submit it to another
directory.

Set up your own Blog and provide good quality content on
it. You can get a free Blog from www.wordpress.com and
there are other places too. Providing good content works in
two ways. It helps to get your site ranked high on search
engines, and because most of your free traffic will come
from there, it is important to get your sites ranked high.
Secondly, providing good content helps to build and brand
you as an expert. People then recommend your site to others
bringing you more traffic of course.

Using the above techniques and spending a little time
putting everything in place will help you to start getting
targeted traffic to your websites for free. There are other
techniques of course but for now, use these in this article
to at least get started.

Privacy & Data Security: Follow FTC Guidelines... Or Suffer The Consequences

Privacy & Data Security: Follow FTC Guidelines... Or Suffer The Consequences
Generally, you are required to protect personal information
stored on your website's server by implementing reasonable
and appropriate data security measures. If you fail
regarding this general requirement, you will be subject to
claims from website visitors whose information has been
compromised.

In addition, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) continues
to aggressively file suits for security violations under
Section 5 of the FTC Act which prohibits unfair or
deceptive practices.

A good example is the enforcement action brought by the FTC
against LifeIsGood.com for failure to implement reasonable
and appropriate data security measures. This case is
significant because the FTC expects all sites to follow
guidelines provided in the settlement of the case.

Lifeisgood.com's Privacy Statement

Life Is Good collected sensitive consumer information,
including names, addresses, credit card numbers, credit
card expiration dates, and credit card security codes
through its website. Its privacy policy claimed: "We are
committed to maintaining our customers' privacy. We collect
and store information you share with us - name, address,
credit card and phone numbers along with information about
products and services you request. All information is kept
in a secure file and is used to tailor our communications
with you."

The FTC Claims

The FTC alleged that, contrary to its privacy policy, Life
Is Good failed to provide reasonable and appropriate
security for the sensitive consumer information stored on
its computer network.

Specifically, the FTC alleged that Life Is Good:

1. unnecessarily risked credit card information by storing
it indefinitely in clear, readable text on its network, and
by storing credit card security codes;

2. failed to assess adequately the vulnerability of its
Web site and corporate computer network to commonly known
and reasonably foreseeable attacks, such as SQL injection
attacks;

3. failed to implement simple, free or low-cost, and
readily available security defenses to SQL and similar
attacks;

4. failed to use readily available security measures to
monitor and control connections from the network to the
Internet; and

5. failed to employ reasonable measures to detect
unauthorized access to credit card information. The
Settlement

In its settlement with the FTC announced in a press release
dated January 17, 2008, Life Is Good agreed to implement
the following 5 administrative, technical, and physical
safeguards in the future. These 5 safeguards are 5
excellent tips -- delivered straight from the FTC -- that
you should also follow:

1. Designate an employee or employees to coordinate the
information security program.

2. Identify internal and external risks to the security
and confidentiality of personal information and assess the
safeguards already in place.

3. Design and implement safeguards to control the risks
identified in the risk assessment and monitor their
effectiveness.

4. Develop reasonable steps to select and oversee service
providers that handle the personal information of customers.

5. Evaluate and adjust its information-security program to
reflect the results of monitoring any material changes to
the company's operations, or other circumstances that may
impact the effectiveness of its security program.

Conclusion

Sometimes form is as important as substance. What I mean is
how you do something, and the fact that you documented it
at the time you actually did it, is sometimes just as
important as the fact that you did it.

The settlement safeguards in the Life Is Good case are a
prime example. Simply having what you believe is a good
data security program is one thing, but being able to
document that you went through the steps outlined by the
FTC is another.

The Life Is Good case points the way to what will work for
data security. So, it's highly recommended that you set up
a filing system that preserves your documentation and
indicates you went through these steps, and when you did
it. Then set up a tickler to remind you to go through the
steps on an annual basis.

We know that there is no data security program that is 100%
safe from illegal intrusions. If you have an unfortunate
data security breach, it's likely the FTC or a state
regulator will come knocking at your door. That's why it's
so important for you to be able to produce a file that
clearly shows you implemented reasonable and appropriate
data security measures in accordance with the FTC
guidelines.

The future of your business may depend on it!
