else. You've got to know what you are doing, why you are
doing it, how to do it, and where to do it. So how and
where do you learn these things?

Well, people learn how to run an internet business, or
business in general in many different ways. Some pay
thousands of dollars and invest years of study to get a
college education in the field of business (usually just to
graduate and go to work for someone else). Others learn
how to run a business from a family member that has already
invested the "sweat equity" in the business, made all the
mistakes, and now have a successful operation. Still

One opinion I have as to why countless people fail at
home-based, online businesses is because they don't have
the proper knowledge and guidance to show them how to make

can't tell me that they are all Harvard business graduates!
There has got to be, even just a few, average Joe's like
you and I that don't necessarily have all the smarts and
resources to make millions on the web just by joining some
online opportunity. How are these people doing it!?

I think one reason is that the successful people follow a
system - a proven system that has been tested over years
and has remained viable. A system that promotes mentorship
to the persons that join it. A mentor that is available to
walk you through the steps and guide you in exactly what to
do and when to do it. If it worked for one person, why
can't it work for the next? Find a business system that is
duplicable and repeatable - one that has made money for
someone else. If it can be duplicated then it should work
for you.

Above all, do your due diligence! You wouldn't buy a
business franchise without spending hour after hour
reviewing all aspects of the business model, would you? If
you would stop now - you are destined for failure. You
have to analyze each and every opportunity you are
considering and determine if it is a viable business
opportunity. Then and only then can you have a chance at
making any money with a home-based, internet business.

Here are the six basic steps in the online business sales

Step 1. Choose Your Prospects

"Prospects" is basically business-speak for potential
clients and/or customers. So, who is the person who is
ideally suited for your product, program or service? Who's
your ideal client or customer? Who makes up your target
market? Is it parents, health professionals, copywriters,
dancers, artists, entrepreneurs, boat owners?

It's critical for the success of any business to choose a
group of people to work with, even if that group is very
broad at first. As you become more and more aware of what
kind of client or customer shows up for you, you'll be able
to more narrowly target that portion of the market, which
will make your marketing a lot easier and bring you cash
flow a lot quicker.

2. Invite Them into Your Funnel

Once you know who your prospects are, you'll want to invite
them into your Marketing & Product Funnel by giving them a
free taste of what it is that you offer in exchange for
their email address.

There are many ways to do this - using your email
signature, offering free introductory teleseminars,
speaking, co-registration programs, Google Adwords, writing
and submitting articles, listing with directories,
participating in discussion lists, etc.

3. Keep in Touch

Once your prospects are in your funnel, you'll want to keep
in touch with them on a consistent basis. Common marketing
knowledge tells us that it takes a minimum of 5-12 times
for your prospects to see your message before it even
registers. That's why so many direct marketers will send
you postcard after postcard with the same offer. They know
that the only way to get you to take action on their offer
is to expose you to the same or similar message over and
over until you're ready to hear it.

A very effective way to keep in touch with your prospects
then is via an ezine. Because following up with your
prospects is vital to making sales from them, publishing an
ezine on a consistent basis does this work for you. The
bonus is that you can follow up with all of your prospects
at once, instead of one by one, which leverages your time -
something you should always be striving for.

4. Make Offers

And because we want to leverage our time, if we're putting
in the work to write and publish an ezine regularly, then
we want to make sure that we are getting a return on that
investment. To do so, you want to make at least one offer
in your ezine that can result in sales for you.

You want to be sure to provide valuable content, but you
also want to make sure that you invite people to take
advantage of one or more of your offerings in each issue.
If you don't make the ask, you won't make the money. So, if
you're uncomfortable asking for the sale, my best
suggestion is to get over it fast if you want to stay in
business for the long haul.

5. Master the Upsell

It takes most new small business owners awhile to grasp the
concept of an upsell, but once they do, it takes their
business to a whole new level.

Once you have one offering to make to your prospects, start
putting together your next offering. You always want to
have a place for them to go to next, always have something
else to invite them to or to take advantage of. Find out
what else they want from you, then create and offer it to
them.

The more products you have to offer, the more sales you'll
make because, instead of having to find new people all the
time to buy your one product, you can upsell your current
clients and customers into your other offerings. And
selling to people who have already bought from you is much
easier than converting new prospects all the time.

6. Repeat the Process

The online business sales cycle is pretty simple really.
Once you've done it once, it's very easy to repeat. As
you're creating your own sales cycle, I suggest documenting
what you do as you go along to make it that much easier to
duplicate the next time around. Each time you repeat the
process, your list of prospects will grow and so will your
income!

There are many ways to price your items on eBay to make
money. Not all strategies will work for every type of
product. This article strives to describe the various
pricing methods that are available for eBay.

Low Starting Price: Items that are popular generally do
better price wise if they start out at a low bid price. By
popular items, this means iPods, name brand clothing,
digital cameras, etc. By starting at a lower bid price,
the item's final sell value will be driven higher because
there are more bidders vying for the item. By starting out
with a low starting price, you will also save money on
listing fees. For expensive items that are not popular or
are specialized, this might not work. You might not get
enough bids to even reach your cost and you may lose money.
A possible solution is to place a Reserve Price on the
auction. A Reserve Price is the minimum price you are
willing to accept for the item. You set a reserve and then
start the auction at a low price. Bids will be posted, but
if the bid is below the reserve price, they will be
notified in their bid confirmation. New bidders will not
see a notice about a reserve price unless they bid under
the reserve price. They will see the current bid price,
however.

Cost-Based Starting Price: This is just starting your
auction at your cost of the items you are selling. This
way you won't lose money if you don't have a lot of bids.
The disadvantage to selling at cost is the higher listing
fees and you will not attract as many bidders.

Buy-It-Now Pricing: The Buy it Now price is the lowest
price you are willing to take for the item during the
auction. After the first bid is placed, the Buy It Now
price will disappear. This is a good way to turn over
inventory quickly and allow you to grow your business. Buy
It Now seems to work best when you list in conjunction with
cost based pricing. If you start too low, you will attract
bidders quickly but lose your Buy It Now(BIN) price.
Because the main advantage of BIN is faster inventory turn
over, it is best to set your BIN price at an average level,
not the high end. This will encourage more impulse buyers
and more sales. Another way to encourage buyers to use BIN
is to offer an incentive for them to use BIN, such as free
shipping.

Second Chance Offer: A few years ago, eBay offered a
feature called the Second Chance Offer(SCO). It was
designed to allow the second highest bidder a chance to buy
at their losing bid in the event the winning bidder did not
pay. It was very successful and was modified so that
sellers could offer an under bidder a chance to buy at
their bid price if you have more than one identical item to
sell. Simply put, from one auction you can make multiple
sales and more money. The best thing is you do not have to
pay any additional listing fees even though you will pay
the final value fee.

SEO Tip #2: Optimize Your 404 Page and Always Be Found

"Error 404: Page Not Found" is a blessing that most
Webmasters curse. Why? Getting a visitor on any page of
your site is fantastic! Don't blow the opportunity. Not
only can you make your "404" page a valuable sales tool,
you can use the following search engine optimization
techniques to attract customers in droves.

A.) Use your main keyword in your title, add a "pipe"
(usually above the Enter key) and then use your secondary
keyword. Here's as example for an SEO site "SEO | Search
Engine Optimization Tips"

B.) Add some keyword rich content using one to two keywords
for the page. If you have less than 250 words on the page,
just use one keyword and use it no more than three times
total. Bold the first use and italicize the second or third
use. Keep in mind this is an "inactive" page so simply tell
the visitor what your site is about and whet their appetite
with a good description. Something like this works well...
"Thank you for visiting SEO (bold) Group, Inc. We're sorry
you seem to have found a missing page but rest assured, if
you are looking for the world's best search engine
optimizations tips (bold or italic), you are at the right
place..." This will go on for a couple paragraphs or as
long as you'd like then end it with something to the effect
of "Please Click Here (link) to visit our site map or click
any link to the left."

C.) Add your site's standard navigation system (bar,
column, etc.) as mentioned above.

D.) Make the look and feel of the customized 404 page match
your main site as closely as possible with a template,
matched palette, cascading style sheets, etc.

E.) Create a link to the site map page if available, and
make the link easy to find. You want your visitor off the
404 page and into your main content as quickly as possible.

Setting up a custom 404 page link usually takes less than
five minutes on most major Web hosting companies like
Godaddy.com. But whatever it takes, it's worth the effort.

SEO Tip #3: Get (Even More) Serious About Linking

I saved the most important for last. If you want to do well
on any search engine, especially Google, linking is THE
single MOST important thing you can do. It's that simple.

Here are the five things you MUST do to make your site #1
on Google:

A.) Find the highest page rank sites linking to your site
AND your competitors' sites.

B.) Run monthly link campaigns and snatch up the best of
the above identified Web sites.

C.) Run regular checks on what pages are still linking back
to your site. Alsomake sure they did not move you from a
high page rank page to a lower one (don't get cheated!)

D.) Eliminate any penalized sites you link to; ASAP!

E.) Check your search engine ranking AND your competitor's
for each of your keywords every week. Do this for Google,
Yahoo, MSN and Alta Vista at the minimum.

Inside Tip: Keeping up can be a lot of work, and is
extremely important, so a lot of SEO Consultants (myself

One last thing to know is that Google was originally a
college student's project created for the sole purpose of
defining a Web site's value by the sites that link to it.

A lot of people are interested in search engine
optimization and publicity these days. However, the web is
changing - many people are still marketing in ways that are
so 2004...

So, one day I'm doing research for an upcoming tutorial I'm
producing and decide to check out how many people each day
are searching for the keyword "submit web2.0".

I go over to Wordtracker and decide to check out the daily
search volume for the search term "submit".

I was suprised to see that a lot of people are interested
in submitting their site to Dogpile. (2000 a day) My first
thought was "that's strange, 2000 people a day - maybe
someone is selling an ebook about how valuable links from
Dogpile are."

The funny thing is that if you are already listed on
Google, Yahoo or MSN, you will be automatically listed on
Dogpile.

Dogpile is a meta-search engine and provides results from
Google, Yahoo, MSN and ASK all in one place. Their Alexa
ranking today is 2,935 (they're the 2,935th busiest site on
the web).

It didn't take me long to see that you can't submit your
site to Dogpile, they get their listings from other
sources...

My first thought was: "Wow, I've hit keyword gold - how
long will it take me to rank for some of these search terms
and start getting a boat-load of highly targeted visitors
to my site?" (These search terms are highly targeted to my
site which shares resouces on web publicity. They wouldn't
be relevant on a site about kite-surfing for example).

So, how long did it take? I received my first visitor from
Google 20 hours after I posted about it on my blog. The
really amazing part is that the blog was only 12 days old.

Right now you may be thinking "How did he do that?" The
concise answer is that I 'engaged an online publicity
campaign'.

What's an "online publicity campaign?"

This is part of the "New Web" environment. A couple years
ago Search Engine Optimization was everything, today there
are dozens of websites that can be "publicized" and bring
you visitors.

Some of these may be websites you interact with everyday,
many of them you will have never heard of. The "New Web" is
here, what's your strategy?

Well, not really. But it's a catchy title, don't you
think? The no "i" in teamwork is a pretty cliché
comment and most people reading this have probably heard it
before. So why bring it up? I mention it here because if
you are embarking on starting an internet business or
home-based business your chances of succeeding are greater
if you are involved in a team approach. Pursuing a
home-based business by yourself can be rewarding but at the
same time very difficult - difficult in the sense that
failure is a high probability for most people for several
reasons. One of the main reasons that people will fail at
home-based or online businesses is because they don't have
adequate knowledge on how to run the business or the
mentorship available to them to guide them to success.

That is where the "I" in sistem comes into play. (OK - you
probably get it by now so I'll start spelling system
correctly). My point is this - you have a much better
chance of success with a home-based or online business if
you "plug" yourself (the "i" component) into a system. Not
just any system but one that has been proven to work, is
repeatable, and that has stood the test of time. Many
cash-generating systems are available to you on the
internet. It is up to you to research these thoroughly and
decide if it is a viable business opportunity and one that
will excite you to take action and stick with it. Why do
I need a system to work in? Why not create my own? You
certainly could do that. You may have a brilliant idea for
a home-based business; one that you are sure will make you
tons of cash. But where do you start? Do you know
everything that you need to know to make the business work
and to make it successful? If you're confident that you do
then great, go for it. But if you're not sure then finding
a business system that works can, at a minimum, guide you
in the right direction to launch your business
successfully. Those that developed the system have likely
already made the mistakes. They can help you avoid making
the same mistakes. Do systems really work? Some do, some
don't. The ones that do have been around for awhile - not
weeks and months, but years! They have been tested and

motivation, persistence and dedication can replicate the
business model. If I were to mention a "system" that sells

developed over many years and have been tried and tested.
They are easily duplicated, repeatable and have been proven
to be successful. That's why you can't drive ½ mile
almost anywhere and not see one.

I have searched many online, home-based businesses in the
past. I have tried several without any success. In
retrospect all those that I tried did not have a step-wise
process to follow and once I was ready to start - I didn't
know how and there was no one to consult with to tell me
how to start! The business I am in now has a proven track
record. It is easily duplicated and repeatable and best of
all those involved are team players. Everyone helps
everyone else succeed. The success of the team is highly
dependent on the success of the individual so it is
imperative that the team work together to help make each
individual successful. The "system" is designed to breed
