Attention Small Biz Owners: Are You Qualified to Read This Article?
It came up in conversation the other day - the question
about how you qualify your prospects. And since not
everyone in the room knew what that meant, we'll explain
briefly here:

To qualify is to make sure a prospect actually fits in your
target market, and has a need that you can fill with
whatever you're offering.

Usually, when the sales gurus talk about qualifying, they
mean you should be asking the right set of questions to
determine whether the person in front of you is a
legitimate prospect.

But what about your website? Since you can't physically be
there 24/7, your content has to step in and do the
qualifying for you, right?

Well, the "Aha moment" we had about websites is that web
surfers - unlike the people you meet face-to-face - are
waaaay more willing to meet you halfway.

After all, if they're online:

1. They're searching for information

2. They have something specific in mind

3. They want to know whether you can meet their needs

In other words, your online prospects are actively trying
to qualify themselves for you.

Web searchers don't want to be wasting their time when
they're on the prowl for a solution. They're actively
trying to figure out whether they belong in your market.
And that's huge! They're making it so much easier on you
than if you were speaking to them in person, sending direct
mail, et cetera, et cetera.

And if you don't have a strong, informative, thoughtful,
and content rich online presence - or even a simple
one-page website! - already? Oh boy, are you missing out.

Earlier this year, we wanted to paint our new office. As
more and more time-pressed folks do these days, Lani went
online to find a local painter. She said, "I'll give my
business to the first Lakes Region painter I can find
online."

She couldn't find a single one, so we painted the office
ourselves. Lani's brother nearly fell 15 feet off a ladder
during the process, but that's another story.

Please, please, if you're not online, then get there as
fast as you can, and make sure anyone who reads your
website comes away knowing whether they're supposed to be
buying from you. Or better than just "buying," investing
their time, attention, and resources in you and the value
you have to offer. Even if they decide not to, that's okay
- that's a separate issue.

Your #1 job is to get 'em there - and make it as easy as
possible for them to do the qualifying themselves.

accomplished through several different methods. One of the
most effective of these is the use of safe lists.

A safe list is a list of people who have agreed to receive

not an issue because all the receivers have opted in and

generation tool when used properly.

Safe lists are abundant all across the Internet. You can
find them easily on Google, Yahoo or your own favorite

lists so you can join multiple lists on one site. This is

Just about all safe lists have membership level options.
These are usually broken up into free, monthly/yearly and

Executive membership. Executive members have access to all

executive receive these ads. Marketers that have an
executive membership are pretty serious about their
business and can be fairly responsive.

A safe list can be a major source of generated leads. Since
you are using a funded proposal, you have something to
offer. This will appeal to the executive membership
especially. The important thing here is to grab the
attention at the subject line. Use an eye catching line
right off and get the reader to open the ad.

Once you have the attention, put your opt-in form inside
the ad to capture the information. Here is where a safe
list is especially powerful. Since your prospect already
knows you are a marketer, they expect a pitch. They also
know what it is you are offering, so the lead you gather is
targeted and specific. This gives you a straight line to a
conversion IF you can capture the imagination and interest
immediately.

A couple of things to remember are to keep your lines at 60
characters each and be concise in your language. Get to the
point while holding the interest and move the lead along to
clicking your link. They're already here so they are
interested, right? Move them along swiftly yet gently and
you will have a strong lead that can be stroked for many

different ways to make money. If you are searching online
for a way to make money on the Internet you may fall into
one of three types of people. We will look at that in this

Here are three categories of people surfing the Internet

1. They are currently making money and want to add another
income stream.

2. They are in a program or have a website and are not
making enough money.

3. They are not currently involved with Internet marketing

Regardless of which category of people you fall in, you
will be faced with some decisions when you start your own
Internet business. It always seems one of the hardest
questions people must answer is, what product should I sell
on the Internet.

Assuming that you do not have a lot of Internet marketing
skills, it is to your benefit, to join a program where you
can receive training, products to sell, and marketing
materials to sell them with. This makes sense for several

way for an average person to make money online. There are
programs available where you can earn money on the rebates
of your purchases and purchases of your group. Anytime
people do not have to sell anything to make money it is
easier to be done.

Two other things I want to mention when it comes to
starting an Internet business to make money this year. One
is if you can provide a service and get paid for that
service you can create good cash flow for yourself. This is
not a good long-term strategy to making money because when
you do not work you do not get paid.

The other thing is, I have found private label right
products to be an excellent way to make money. These are
good because the products are already created for you. You
can alter them to make them your own, or sell them as is
and make money that way. You can set up a sales page and
have money paid directly to you, which is better than
affiliate marketing, because you do not have to wait for
commission checks.

Once you have decided on what Internet business you want to
promote you are better off to focus 100% of your effort on
it until you're making money. This means the majority of
your time must be spent marketing and promoting your
business. You need to put blinders on and go full steam
ahead and not get sidetracked on other projects or products.

If you do that, you can make money in 2008. There are
literally thousands of people around the world making money
online, and the only difference between them and you is
they have sacrificed something to get where they are. It
could be they have sacrificed some of their time and money
to build an Internet business. So can you!

another. Many of us also know that to make money with

tracks your site and your ads. Then whenever some one

increase their popularity, because the visitor does not
need to take any action what so ever for you to receive
payment, all it takes is for some one to visit your site
and you get paid for every single visitor. These ads are
5-second audio ads that will play whenever someone visits
the page on your site that you have placed the code on.

Another plus about these types of ads is that they work in
a similar way to Adsense they are contextual. In other
words the adverts that are played on your site will be
relevant to your sites content.

A possible downside that is foreseeable is how high will
these ads rate on the visitor annoyance scale. It is common

for most surfers (although I do get a lot of sign-ups from

So really it comes down to a choice, either you can

should be relevant to the page it's associated with. By
relevant I mean 'contains' appropriate keywords or keyword
phrases.

H1 Tags:

H1 or Heading-1 tags are nearly as important as title tags.
As you may have guessed, these tags tell the search engines
that your page is about what the title is specifying. And
it's important to place your primary and even secondary
keywords into your H1 tags.

Keyword Density:

Keyword density still matters but it's not as important as
it used to be. You'll be safe with a general rule: Mention
your keyword several times early, then a few times through
the body of the text and again near the end of your copy.

The search engines, led by Google, are implementing LSI,
Latent Semantic Indexing, in their ranking algorithms.
Geeky LSI is hard-core mathematics. But for marketers, just
try to include "natural" terms associated with your primary
and secondary keywords in your main text.

Internal Link Structure:

This simply refers to your internal navigation menu. Or
where your links point to within your site. One very common
mistake is using the "home" link.

Take the primary keyword for your home page and substitute
it for "Home" in the rest of your site's pages. Doing this
will help build internal link popularity for that keyword.
Then do the same for your internal pages. Always use the
primary keyword for a page in any links pointing to that
page.

Off-Page SEO Factors:

Off-page SEO usually involves building back links to your
website using your main keyword as the anchor text for
those links.

And your link campaign should use not just one method but
multiple methods. The reason simply being if one method
stops working, you have the others. You're not putting all
your eggs in one basket!

Link-Building Methods:

Reciprocal Linking:

Reciprocal linking involves two webmasters putting a link
on their site for the other. Most marketers did this
manually in the past. But now you can join services that
make it very easy to exchange links.

One-Way Links:

These are the most coveted links to have...especially if
they're from a relevant authority site. Some are saying
reciprocal links are being phased out or becoming less
effective. But it won't hurt you to have some reciprocal
linking happening.

created a visual guide to your website. As websites became
larger and more complex webmasters used them as a way to
view the entire structure of a website to find the

In recent years the search engines have been viewing site
maps as a good way to index websites and find all the
related content. Google led the charge to make this a
mainstream web tool when it introduced XML sitemaps.
Creating and submitting an XML sitemap to Google is still
the best way to get your website completely crawled by
Google. It has become a standard SEO best practice.

As with many things on the web, Google, Yahoo, AOL, MSN and
Ask all had their own specific way to use and submit
sitemaps in the format they dictated. About six months ago
a couple of these folks joined forces to create a
standardized method of sitemap creation. They formed an
organization called Sitemaps.org and agreed on using the
XML sitemap format.

Sorry for the history lesson, but this is really good news

What is a sitemap?

last updated, how often it usually changes, and how

Building an XML sitemap

While there are several ways to actually create an XML
sitemap I like XML-Sitemaps.com The good news is that if
you have a rather small site (under 500 pages) you can
simply use their free tool to create an xml sitemap. Over

Getting Your Sitemap found

Once you create your sitemap it's still a good idea to
create a free Google Webmaster account so that you can
submit your sitemap directly to Google Sitemaps

Robots.txt file

Now here's where the coming together of the search engines
gets really nice. Not only will Ask, Google, Yahoo, AOL and
MS Live accept the XML format for your sitemap they have
also decided to accept an easy, auto-discovery method. In
other words you won't have to figure out how to submit to
each as they will find your sitemap if you direct them
using your robots.txt file. A robots.txt file is a very
simple file that resides on your server giving information
for the search engines. Many use this file to tell the
search engines not to find certain information.

If you already have a robots.txt file, you can simply add
the line of code below anywhere to it. If you don't have
one, simply create a file in notepad or other text editor,
add the code below, save it as robots.txt and upload to the
root of your site. (Obviously you need to put the actual
URL of your site in here)

Advanced tip - If you use the paid version of xml-sitemap
generator you can set up what's known as a cron job (it's a
Unix only thing) and have your site crawled on a weekly
